Kortfattat syfte
This pilot study examines a collection of archival records from the Scandinavian Joint Expedition to Sudanese Nubia (SJE) (1960–64) in order to prepare for a large programme grant application. The scope and nature of the material will be determined and methods for digital preservation within a geographical information system (GIS) will be developed to investigate life and death in ancient Nubia.
Summary
The project will revitalize research and public interest in the work of the Scandinavian Joint Expedition to Sudanese Nubia (1960-64), which was part of an enormous effort of UNESCO to rescue the cultural heritage of the Egyptian and Sudanese Nubia. The collection held in great part in the Gustavianum Museum, Uppsala, has been under researched in recent years. The project will assess the scope and nature of the cultural material and documentation for digital conservation and preservation. It will also produce 2D and 3D visualisations of a small sample of the Nubian mortuary landscapes enabling chronological interpretations of spatial organisation, burial practices, and cultural interactions.
